This series brought renowned speakers from across the country to present on their work in addressing the needs, challenges and outcomes facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning youth and their families involved in the child welfare system. Scroll down for info on each date.

- Examine diversity of LGBTQ foster youth and explore ways to engage them with respect to the multiple identities they have and the challenges they face.
- Gain a greater understanding of the impact sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) can have on foster youth’s safety, including the experiences of bullying, harassment and violence for LGBTQ youth in care.
- Gain a greater understanding of the impact SOGIE can have on foster youth’s well-being, including: how to incorporate the concept of “normalcy” in our care for LGBTQ youth, how to uphold LGBTQ foster youth’s rights to improve their experiences from “surviving” to “thriving.”
- Be able to identity at least three strategies that can be used to facilitate culture change in a child welfare agency.
- Gain a better understanding of the challenges that may be encountered when working towards system level change.
- Become familiar with the steps necessary to lay the foundation to begin culture change work.
- Participants will gain knowledge about the range of parental responses and emotions when a child comes out as transgender;
- Participants will be able to discuss the risks associated with lack of familial support for trans youth;
- Participants will develop strategies for diffusing “rejection” and enhancing parental understanding and support
- Participants will learn about the barriers to permanency, well being, and stability that youth with diverse SOGIE in systems of care face
- Participants will hear about previous and current efforts across the country to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ youth and their families in child welfare
- Participants will acquire a road map for starting change efforts within their own systems.
- Learn what it means to be an active-ally for sexual & gender minority youth.
- Review & practice methods to roll out your agency’s welcome mat for LGBT prospective parents.
- Discover ways to incorporate queer voices in your programming through ambassadorship opportunities.
